Getting in Gear
Fundamental Warm-ups for String Orchestra
By Anne Marie Patterson, Katie O'Hara LaBrie & Deborah Baker Monday
PART 1: FINGERBOARD GEOGRAPHY
Explore fingerboard geography though a variety of excerises, etudes and duets using our 5 “Gear” finger pattern system. Each song in this chapter, and throughout the book, contains a GEAR ICON to let students (and teachers) know which finger patterns appear in the exercise. For example, this icon tells you that both Gear 1 (the major pentachord) and Gear 2 (the minor pentachord) will be utilized.

The book starts off by teaching the different Gears as well as how to mix them to prepare students on playing in keys beyond D Major. But that's not all! The chapter can be used as a drop in resource to help students warm-up on any number of skills: from how to improve intonation, understanding tunnels and anchors, reading E and C string notes, the importance of half and whole steps, how to read key signatures, exploring chromaticism, and more!
